May 5th is known as Cinco de Mayo. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified the defeat of a European colonial power and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo. It has come to signify Hispanic and Mexican pride and a time to celebrate the rich culture.
May 14 is Mother's Day. In the United States, a form of Mother’s Day has been celebrated since the early 20th century. It was started as a religious observance by Ana Jarvis. She promoted the first worship service to honor mothers. The first formal Mother’s Day i the U.S. was not until 1908.
May 20th is Armed Forces Day; a day to salute sharply all of the men and women in all branches of the military, who protect you and our country.
May 29 is Memorial Day; officially celebrated on the last Monday in May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day observance go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War.
